Cities of Ash

Despite some 150 years of archaeological discoveries, the biblical sites of Sodom and Gomorrah have been neglected or avoided like a hot stove. In this account we present images and the account of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
The Bible tells us the fate of the cities of the plain ...

And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord (Gen. 2), like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar." Genesis 13:10.
We are told here that the region of Sodom and Gomorrah was a very well watered, fertile region and comparable to the Garden of Eden. We are then told what was wrong with these cities of the plain. We read,

"But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly." Verse 13.
Here we find that the people were not only sinners; they were wicked and sinners and that exceedingly, extremely. They are described so in three areas of their existence:

  1. Sexual immorality Gen. 19:4-5,8-9, 31-38.
  2. the sin of violence Gen. 19, same verses
  3. they were very materialistically minded, they did not think of the poor, Ezekiel 16:49,50.

These then were the reasons why they were wicked and sinners exceedingly.

Here is a more detailed account of their wickedness:

"The profusion reigning everywhere gave birth to luxury and pride. Idleness and riches make the heart hard that has never been oppressed by want or burdened by sorrow. The love of pleasure was fostered by wealth and leisure, and the people gave themselves up to sensual indulgence. "Behold," says the prophet, "this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before Me: therefore I took them away as I saw good." Ezekiel 16:49,50. There is nothing more desired among men than riches and leisure, and yet these gave birth to the sins that brought destruction upon the cities of the plain. Their useless, idle life made them a prey to Satan's temptations, and they defaced the image of God, and became satanic rather than divine. Idleness is the greatest curse that can fall upon man, for vice and crime follow in its train. It enfeebles the mind, perverts the understanding, and debases the soul. Satan lies in ambush, ready to destroy those who are unguarded, whose leisure gives him opportunity to insinuate himself under some attractive disguise. He is never more successful than when he comes to men in their idle hours." {PP 156.2}

"The marketplaces, the merchandise stores, need cleansing. Courts of justice, lawyers' offices, the medical fraternity, need purifying. Shall we say that the medical missionary work needs cleansing? Christ, who came to our world to reveal the Father's heart of tender compassion, has shown us the methods which Sabbath keepers are to follow in their work. These are plainly specified in the 58th chapter of Isaiah. God will not be a party to any dishonest transaction. The soul who keeps the Sabbath is stamped with the sign of God's government, and he must not dishonor this sign. By closely examining the word of God, we may know whether we have the King's mark, whether we have been chosen and set apart to honor God. Please read Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and Ezekiel 20:12-20. ... {MM 123.2}

"In the experience of Daniel and his companions we have an instance of the triumph of principle over temptation to indulge the appetite. It shows us that through religious principle young men may triumph over the lusts of the flesh, and remain true to God's requirements. . . . What if Daniel and his companions had made a compromise with those heathen officers, and had yielded to the pressure of the occasion, by eating and drinking as was customary with the Babylonians? That single instance of departure from principle would have weakened their sense of right and their abhorrence of wrong. Indulgence of appetite would have involved the sacrifice of physical vigor, clearness of intellect, and spiritual power. One wrong step would probably have led to others, until, their connection with Heaven being severed, they would have been swept away by temptation."{ML 75.3}

Once having departed from faith in God, the city dwellers embarked on a steep downhill slope of sin. Finally God decided that they had sinned away their days of grace and in order to make it possible to save people around them, they must be destroyed. The cities had committed the unpardonable sin. In our own time, many individuals and groups are in that same position.

The destruction is described in Genesis 19. We read,

"Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven. And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground."
Genesis 19:24,25.
"... turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes ..."
2.Peter 2:6
Anyone visiting there today, will find that is exactly what the region looks like for miles around. Nothing grows. There are no trees, no grass, no creatures and no fish in the sea. It became the opposite of the Garden of Eden. Sodom and Gomorrah were reduced to ashes.

Let us read what Abraham saw on that day. We read,

"And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace. And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt." Gen. 19:27-29.

Standing in the area, visitors are impressed by the fact that the Dead Sea is 1526 feet (479 m) below sea level. See here in contrast an image of the highest places on earth. The Bible tells us that God's glory is like a consuming fire for blatant sin which burnt the area melting out the whole place without contaminating the whole area with nuclear fallout or all those life destroying things man comes up with. God's power was used only in a small way. His power is so great that He can create suns, galaxies, planets and all we see above. When God speaks it stands - no delay. The subdued glory of one angel send a platoon of Roman soldiers to flee. [Deut. 4:24; 9:3; Hebr. 12:29 - The glory of the Lord is such a fire, Rev. 15:2. God's fire never goes out but those burned go out, burned to be ashes. When Christ comes in His father's and his glory and that of all the holy angels, sinful man will flee to find shelter and hide from before the face of God Almighty, Rev. 6:15, while all the redeemed will rise from their graves, 1.Thess. 4:16. No rockets or man's nuclear devices are a match for the power of God. Not until the second resurrection, after the millennium, the Bible indicates, will those who decided against God try to destroy the city of God and fire will destroy their dry, withered remains, 2.Thess. 2:8; Mal. 4:1,3; Matth. 25:41; 2.Peter 3:10. - Take heart, while the wicked live in fear Hebr. 10:27, God's people know this world will not end in a large nuclear holocaust, but by the power of God when He appears in all His glory. So be wise, and build (cooperate with God to save your life) on that fire proof cubicle (repent, pray and sin no more) so you can stand on your feet when Jesus comes and enjoy the benevolent glory light of God to take you home. But its true, we should not spend money on weapons but help the needy.]

In the desert near the Dead Sea are some unusual white formations. Cities of Ash

In these formations strange geometric structures can be observed. Cities of Ash

Eroded structures which do not look natural. Cities of Ash

These structures are composed entirely of ash and are reminiscent of man made buildings. Cities of Ash
Even though we are not saying that these are remains of buildings, we know that geological scenarios can account for such formations, they are quite interesting to watch. Any actual buildings would have been totally destroyed.

The Biblical Account of the history of the region reads as follows:

"These (Amraphel, Arioch, Ellasar, Chedorlaomer) made war with Be'ra king of Sodom, and with Bir'sha king of Gomor'rah, Shi'nab king of Ad'mah, and … Shem-e'ber king of Ze-bo'im, and the king of Be'la, which is Zoar. And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomoarrah …and … joined battle with them in the… valley of Sid'dim. And the valley of Sid'dim was full of slime pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there … And they (Amraphel etc.) took all the goods of Sodom and Gomor'rah."
Genesis 14:1,2, 8-11.

In the shade, a sulphur burn test reveals the biblical account as rather very reliable. Cities of Ash

Sulphur burns at 444.674 degrees Centigrade (832.41° F). Cities of Ash
"Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed [them] all. Even so shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed."

THE END

The Bible teaches that the deeply burned out sites of ethically insolvent Sodom and Gomorrah are to serve us as an example of what will happen at the end time. The glory of God, which is described as "paved work of sapphire stone" (Ex. 24:10) is a devouring or consuming fire to those who remain in sin (Deut. 4:24; 9:3; Hebr. 12:28-29).

This world has seen the outworking of evil to its very depth. All sin is equally bad in the site of God, but some sin results in consequences with long range, tragic effects. The Prophet Isaiah, too, was concerned when he wrote, ". . . they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not." Isaiah 3:9.

That means, when Jesus appears again with power and great glory (Matth. 24:30) "... then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved." 2. Thessalonians 2:8-10.

Considering what is happening all around us we must inquire as to the reasons why such things take place and how we can escape. We as people, in faith on Christ Jesus must willingly and gladly cooperate with the salvation offered to us and cleanse our soul temple, our mind, now, from all that has to do with sin. When Jesus comes again it is too late for He comes as King to conquer this time, not as a Lamb to be slain. The brightness of His appearing will slay the wicked for nothing of sin can exist before God. Please read here the encouraging way how to do that and here the continuation of the truths presented here.
