Berenice II
The name Bernice/Berenice is pronounced `Bare-uh-nee-kay' in Greek. She was the great granddaughter of Herod the Great and the scion of a Hasmonean king of Judea as well. Her father was Herod Agrippa I and her brother was Herod Agrippa II, both rulers of Judea. She was born in 28 A.D., she was with her brother at Paul's trial in Caesarea, Acts 25:23; 26:30. She was married three times - briefly in each case. Her 3rd husband was king Polomon (or Polemo) II of Cilicia, a direct decendant of Marc Anthony. In the years leading up to the Jewish revolt (64-70 AD), she was in Jerusalem. She tried to intervene with the Roman rulers in behalf of the Jews and tried hard to dissuade the Jews from rebelling. While in Jerusalem, Vespasian's son Titus took a fancy toward her even though he was 10 years younger. In 75 AD Berenice arrived in Rome with her brother. She moved into the palace of Titus and acted as his wife and was called the `New Cleopatra'. When Titus became emperor in 79 AD, he sent her back to Jerusalem, only for her to come back 2 years later. [BAR, Vol. 36, No. 1, Jan/Feb 2010, p. 48,49.]
