The `Green' line represents the route taken by the coalition forces of King Jehoram of Israel, Jehoshaphat, the King of Judah, and Edom against the King of Moab residing in (Kir)-Hareseth. For the full story see 2.Kings 3:4-27. [See `The Moabite War' in BAR, Vol. XII, May/Jun 1986, p. 60.]
The violet locations are Ammonite and Moabite towns.
The switch backs along the King's Highway between Aroer and Aqrabat are not shown.
[See Amos Kloner, `Mesillot on the Arnon: An Iron Age (Pre-Roman) Road in Moab' in BASOR, May 2003, No. 330, p. 65-81. Includes several B&W photographs of the road.

The `Trunk Road', the `Via Maris', connected Egypt with the northern Levant, and from their either Anatolia or Mesopotamia. It is called `the way of the sea' by Isaiah 9:1. It stretched between Damascus, Kuneitra, Hazor, Megiddo and Gaza. Others see the `Via maris' (Hebr. `derek hayyam', Isa. 9:1; Ez. 41:12 (not a roadway); 1Ki. 18:43), `look toward the sea') between Acco/Ptolemais/Acre to Capernaum in east-west direction. The expression `Via Maris' did not come in use until the late 13th century AD. Capernaum was destroyed, fell apart, either ca. 665 or 746 AD. [BA, June 1991, p. 66.] Khirbet Iskander is located near Yahaz/Beth diblathen. [BASOR, Spr. 1984, p. 64.]
