Assumption Parish emergency officials told me the oil well blowout occurred at around 4 a.m. and that the well is still spewing. They also told me that cleanup is underway and a few evacuations have occurred due to the incident. lsucowboy told me he is concerned about runoff due to the blowout, and added that he is in contact with environmental quality. Right now it is raining oil and methane a mile or more away.

Within the next 42 minutes, a 5.1 magnitude quake also rattled the region, along with a magnitude 6.2 quake. Weaker quakes of magnitude 4.9 and 4.8 hit the area after 3 p.m. The epicenters of the earthquakes were clustered within 90 kilometers (56 miles) of each other and some 180 kilometers (110 miles) north of Enarotali, Indonesia.

05-31-10 -- A volcanic eruption near the Pacific's Northern Mariana Islands shot clouds of ash and vapor nearly eight miles into the sky, federal scientists said.
The eruption occurred early Saturday and appeared to come from an underwater volcano off Sarigan, a sparsely inhabited island about 100 miles north of the U.S. commonwealth's main island of Saipan.
The Northern Marianas are about 3,800 miles SWW of Hawaii at ca. E147, N16.
USGS volcanologist Game McGimsey said Sunday that scientists are still trying to pinpoint the source but evidence is pointing to an underwater mountain.
"People on the island (Sarigan) heard a loud explosion and almost immediately there was a heavy ash fall which turned to a light fall fairly quickly," McGimsey told The Associated Press. He said there was no ash in Saipan or Guam.
The eruption was fairly brief and no other volcanic clouds have been detected, said McGimsey, who is based in Anchorage, Alaska. Scientists don't know if the undersea activity is continuing.
Satellite images showed the cloud reaching to 40,000 feet. But the USGS said it was largely water vapor and strong winds were dispersing it.
McGimsey said researchers flew over the area Sunday and spotted discolored water presumably over the volcanic vent, estimated at 1,000 feet beneath sea level.

It was a provocation to cause an incident probably masterminded by a central power in Europe. - Israeli, like Gaza forces before, have attacked the international aid convoy Freedom Flotilla en route to the besieged Gaza Strip, killing at least 10 people and leaving more than 50 injured. Why? Most likely because they do not want to be hit by rockets launched into their homes ever again. No one seems to cry for those victims of inhuman attacks. The attack came on Monday morning after one of the six ships in the convoy was hit by Israeli navy forces before being stormed by commandos descending from helicopters.
In Gaza, Palestine's democratically elected Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh strongly condemned the attack on the flotilla and called on the international community to protect the aid mission. Where was he when Israel was hit by rockets? Asleep? The flotilla was seeking to break Israel's crippling blockade of Gaza and deliver basic necessities to the impoverished Palestinians in the coastal enclave.
05-30-10 -- In Guatemala, the Pacaya volcano began spewing lava, rocks and debris on Thursday, killing at least two people and injuring more than 50.
At least 1,700 people have fled the eruption, some 30km (19 miles) south of the capital city. In the village of Calderas, close to the eruption, Brenda Castaneda said her family hid under furniture as molten rocks fell on her house.
"We thought we wouldn't survive. Our houses crumbled and we've lost everything," she told the Associated Press from a temporary shelter.
The volcano has covered parts of Guatemala City in ash - up to 7cm (2.7in) thick in some areas - forcing the closure of the country's main international airport.
Seismologists have warned of more eruptions "in the coming days" from Pacaya - one of the most active volcanoes in Central America. - - What about that 30 stories deep sink-hole? We have to realize that relatively narrow Central America has beaches on both sides, the Atlantic and the Pacific, the greatest oceans in the world. In addition has tropical rainfall for millennia done its work underground. So between these agents of underground water actions, seems to me, we should not be surprised that there are sinkholes showing up.
In Ecuador, the Tungurahua volcano forced the evacuation of seven villages and shut the airport and schools in Guayaquil, the country's largest city. There is no suggestion that the two eruptions are related, but the Tungurahua volcano sent ash plumes six miles (10km) into the air.
Several thousand people have evacuated their homes in the area, 95 miles (150km) south-east of the capital Quito.
Strong winds blew the ash over the country's most populous city, Guayaquil, and forced aviation officials to close the country's main airport.
Julio Castro, who lives in Guayaquil, said he was worried about the health of children.
"Suddenly, without warning, the ash started to fall, and it was heavy, some even got into my eyes," he told the Associated Press.
"I can't see well now, it is annoying and we are worried for the children, above all."
There were reports that the ash cloud was dissipating as it drifted out over the Pacific Ocean.

Remember: Living food keeps you alive. Dead food makes you dead. The more fresh, living food you consume, the healthier you'll be. Sadly, our interference with the global climate is resulting in radical weather patterns that are destroying huge quantities of fresh produce, greatly reducing the supply of "living" food.
The alternative for individuals or families is to grow your own food. Grow as much as you can in your own gardens.
