| The Battle of Armageddon |
To begin our study we read first of all from the Bible,
In this study we want to discover the real meaning of the frightful words, `The Battle of Armageddon.' Some may be really surprised at what you are going to be able to read. Some may be upset with all what you heard before on this subject for it is not what so many have characterized it to be in order to be sensational and to draw crowds. Neither does the biblical account of the Battle of Armageddon teach that there is going to be a war between the east and the west as some army commanders have suggested in the past. Neither does the biblical Armageddon agree with the secret rapture teachings and theories which are so prevalent. May that suffice to awaken your thinking. Let us begin with some real Bible Facts:
I. The Cause for the Battle of Armageddon.
II. Where Does This Battle Take Place.
III. Who are The Participants of the Battle of Armageddon.
IV. When Did The Battle of Armageddon Begin.
V. How Will The Battle of Armageddon End.
VI. Who Will Be The Winner of The Battle of Armageddon.
As we proceed please keep in mind that every war that ever took place on earth has had at least two enemies. Armageddon is no exception. Since the Bible reveals that one army will be completely annihilated when victory is achieved it is of great importance to know which side will win. Let us begin by studying the cause of Armageddon.
In order for a war to exist between two great powers there must be some problem, some disagreement, some conflict, some goal that is to be achieved.
The Bible Teaches: Armageddon is a great war between the eternal God, the Creator of our universe with all of His loyal subjects against the devil, with all of his army of followers who have chosen him as their god.
The cause for which these two great powers are fighting is over that question:
Is it Christ? - or is it Satan?
Armageddon is in fact a fight to overthrow Jehovah!
A fight to dethrone the LORD of the Universe!
It is a battle to deify the man of sin, the devil himself!
One thing we can learn from the great wars of our planet, is, that achieving a decisive victory, involves a series of battles.
When we study World War II - there were a number of great battles, each leading to a final battle, and this way we have,
f) the Battle of Armageddon is no exception.
In this study we shall find out that the Battle of Armageddon is composed of seven major battles. We shall study them one at a time.
1. The Battle of Armageddon Began In Heaven to Overthrow God's Throne.
We are talking about a battle that took place more than 6000 years ago.
We read,
"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High." Isaiah 14:12-14. Here we discover the basic cause of this war. Lucifer was so filled with pride and self-conceit that he attempted to throw Christ from the eternal Throne and place himself on the Throne of the universe. It was his plan to usurp the power of God, and in order to achieve this goal he promised to change God's Law, which testifies to a God of love and of obedience, to a government based on love of self, in which every subject could obey the desires of his own heart.[200] But Lucifer hid the fact, that all must surrender to his dictatorship. We should never underestimate the seriousness of this heavenly cue. A divided heaven and its two opposing sides:
These evil angels who chose to obey the devil in the attempt to overthrow God's government. This way began the first of seven battles which the scriptures call the `Battle of Armageddon.' The Bible tells us,
"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." Revelation 12:7-9. The outcome is very clear. In this first great battle, Christ expelled Satan and all of his followers from heaven itself. But keep in mind, the issue, the cause over which this first battle was fought, is the same over which each succeeding battle is fought. For the devil never changes, and God never changes from His Divine Principle. The devil is still determined, to make himself into a god. He would change God's eternal law and enlist every created being in his army by using the same successful methods that he used on the angels in heaven - namely deception, flattery, doubt and downright lies. This takes us now to number ... 2. The Battle for the Garden of Eden.
The battle to capture Adam and Eve. To conquer Adam and Eve may have taken only a short time. We read the issues as follows,
"Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat." Genesis 3:1-6. Here we find the detailed account of the Fall of Adam and Eve. A fall which has touched the lives of everyone of us here, for it brought into this world: sin, sorrow, pain, sickness and death. Satan bringing sin into the world reveals `Satan's', `Insane', `Nature.' And in capturing our first parents, Satan was able to achieve the rulership of this world. He was thus able to make himself into a god of this world, which he was not able to do in heaven. Satan was behind all this, he wanted to be worshipped, he was to be obeyed as the dictator of this planet - which brings us to battle number .... 3. The Battle that Ended in the Flood.
This battle lasted hundreds and hundreds of years. It involved the millions, perhaps even billions, as man multiplied on earth.
Satan found a willing tool to spread sin in the world in Cain, the oldest son of Adam.
Satan ". . . filled Cain with doubt and with madness against his innocent brother and against God, because his sacrifice was refused and Abel's accepted. And he slew his brother in his insane madness. . . . Cain's . . . lack of submission and obedience . . . He thought his own plans in offering to God merely the fruit of the ground was nobler . . . thus expressing his own weakness and sinfulness. Cain slighted the blood of the atonement. . . . Adam in transgressing the law of Jehovah had opened the door for Satan . . . The rebellion of Satan against God was most determined. . . . The world had become so corrupt and debased . . . in the days of Noah that God was provoked to destroy its inhabitants by the waters of the flood. As men again multiplied upon the earth . . . Men lifted themselves up against the God of Heaven." {R&H, March 3, 1874}
What other problems arose from these events for our time?
We can trace it down to some modern translations which do not divide the Word as God gave it.
|
| "There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown." Gen. 6:4. (KJV) | "In those days . . . when the evil beings from the spirit world were sexually involved with human women, their children became giants . .." Gen. 6:4. (Living Bible) |
So we ask, who are these giants on the earth? Are they spirits or beings from other worlds? What is the answer? Here is the Bible answer.
They were the daughters of those men who were the sympathizers of Cain. But Satan was so successful in deploying his counterfeit government, that practically every living soul decided to take his side. The Bible says it this way,
"The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth." Genesis 6:11-13. In those days, when it was time for the Flood, there were only eight souls, out of all those billions or millions of antediluvians -- there were only eight souls who God knew as righteous upon all the earth - eight people who were faithful to God and obeyed His commands. This teaches us, that God never counts success by numbers, but by love, truth, and obedience. This fact we need to keep in mind. So, what does God do, having only eight souls siding for Him? What does He do to a world that is almost completely dominated by Satan? No problem. It says,
God was bringing to an end the great wickedness of those times. That brings us to 4. The Time of Abraham - To Develop a New People for God
His descendants were to eventually settle in the land of Palestine. Jerusalem was to become their capital. All earthly kingdoms were to be attracted to this powerful nation to discover its glory, its power, which was based solely on love and obedience.
No wonder, that Satan was very quick to develop his own battle plan. Satan chose a man by the name of Nimrod.
This way began the new kingdom of Satan, called `Babel', `Bab' means gate, `el' means God; they wanted to reach up to the gates of God's kingdom. They may have first taught the idea of the spheres, the covering above the clouds, behind which God's kingdom was located.
They said, `Let us make a name for ourselves' (Gen. 11:4), which is the principal of sin.
Through this man Nimrod, the followers of Satan determined to disobey God - they would build a tower so high, so mighty, that they thought God could not destroy it. But God dispersed them, by confounding their one language into many languages.
And with a mighty stroke of lightening he destroyed that tower of Babel.
Satan salvaged what he could and took his followers that he could get together to build the city of Babylon on the banks of the Euphrates River. He patterned this city after the Jerusalem in heaven from which he had been cast out - with its hanging gardens, large walls and temples, and beautiful architecture.
Babylon became the center and the seat of Satan's government.
These two warring factions had completely different objectives. The Jews, were to display God's government of love, in which God had promised to give His only Son as a sacrifice for man's sins, and thus bring freedom and everlasting life to all of His obedient subjects. While Satan's kingdom of paganism, located in Babylon, demanded the sacrifice of the sons and the daughters of his subjects, to be offered alive to the god of Baal. And they did this in fear to appease the wrath of Satan. In doing so, they would worship and honor the devil as their god.
This way began the great counterfeit of God's truth, but instead of worshipping the `S-o-n', the Son of God, who with love would give Himself for the human race, Satan instituted the worship of the `S-u-n', the Sun-god, as his subjects lived in continual fear of death.
Of this god speaks Isaiah,
But wonder of wonders, Heaven's Commander, Jesus Christ Himself, came down to this world to meet the devil in a face to face confrontation. God did not ask His subjects to do what He would not do Himself. This way, He would reveal to the universe the kind of being Satan was. Showing that he was a murderer, that he was a liar, that he was determined to destroy Christ that he himself might become God - a tryant.
That is why we read,
So, Jesus Christ, who could not die, prepared for Himself a body that could die. He came to this earth, ruled by Satan, to live as a man, and to proof to the universe that man could live without sinning if he would give himself totally to his God.
Satan tried every temptation common to man. He was infuriated at his failure to overcome the Son of God.
What does he do?
He infiltrates the Jewish Church, captures its priests and rulers, and demands that the Romans crucify the Son of God.[400]
Under Satanic pressure, Jesus was nailed to the cross, dying the death that was to be ours. Proving to the universe that everything God had said about Satan was true.
That is why we read,
Thus by murdering the Son of God, Satan tried to keep Christ in that tomb forever that he might cease the throne of this earth, but, thank God, Jesus arose in victory.
We further read,
And He adds in John,
For this reason we may know, by dying for you and me, Christ won the right to redeem you and me. He won the right to recapture the ownership of this world. Satan became bound to this world, never again to leave it to enter heaven's courts. But the battle was far from over. Now began the next great phase of the Battle of Armageddon.
5. The Battle of Armageddon Continuous After the First Love was Lost
The old Jewish Church and the nation were now rejected, for they crucified their Saviour. As Jesus, from the Mt. of Olives, looked the last time upon the City of Jerusalem He cried,
This time, God begins anew with the gentiles - with the establishment of the Christian era - based once more on the principles of a changeless God.
Love, freedom of choice, obedience and eternal life.
This good news went like wildfire. These pagans had been taught to fear the god of revenge. A god that they hated and were afraid of; and now, they could see, there was a great difference. Many of us do not realize how the devil had captured the world. Even living within individuals.
When you read the scriptures you find, almost every day Jesus walked about it, it says, he was casting devils out of people. This was really a terrible situation,
There was no hope!
They were devil possessed!
And now came the great and wonderful truth, that God was a God of love!
That He would forgive! That He loved so much that He would die for you!
And this gospel spread throughout the whole world in one generation. Satan was stunned. He was amazed. He saw his subjects become converts to the cause of Christ. He saw, like a mad-man, that he was losing - and so what was he going to do about it?
He attacks the church with a relentless persecution.
The blood of Christians spilled by the sword and by beasts did not proof what he looked for. It proofed only to be the seed for new converts. Satan was so concerned, that now he commenced the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on mankind.
Failing to win by persecution, he now ordered his pagan subjects to join the Christian church.[530] Thus through infiltration, he could change the gospel. And so it was the Apostle Paul who warned of this danger,
Satan was gaining ground when Paul wrote this. But this warning was overlooked by the Christian church, for they were tired of persecution. They were amazed at the millions of new converts. The church was faced now with a greater danger than ever before - for now the unconverted converts demanded a compromise of its blood bought doctrines.
Paganism, now within the church, claimed that man could save himself by works.[550] Thus opening the door to idol worship.
And they agitated Sun-day, a day to the pagan sun god to take the place of the holy seventh day Sabbath, and thus set aside the blessed day that God had given.
Soon every eternal doctrine was compromised to the traditions of paganism. Thus began the papal reign. A religion, which God calls Babylon - the same type, for the devil never changes, in Babel and Babylon.
Being a mixture of Christianity and Paganism, now it plunged the world, into what we know from history as the Dark Ages.
During this period of time, Satan removed the Word of God from all people.
But God raised up some mighty man, who believed and taught the scriptures. These were men such as John Wickliff, Huss, Tyndale, Luther and others ...
Thus began the Protestant Reformation. The Bible was again given to the people. This brought the papacy to its knees and made it possible for Napoleon to inflict a deadly wound, ending the reign of papal power of some 1260 years.
But Protestantism failed to finish the work that God had given it to do. It still clung to many of the traditions of Paganism. But God was prepared. He startled the world with a great earthquake in 1755, followed by the darkening of the sun, and the moon looking like blood in 1780, and finally the falling of the stars in 1833. These phenomena certainly caused people to look up into the sky. Their attention was now drawn to the Bible which had promised such events in that exact sequence. God intended by these signs for man to be reacquainted with His Second Coming.
Suddenly, the world was awakened to the news of the soon coming Saviour. This way began the last message of warning to be given by a faithful few who would keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
This was the beginning of the `Three Angels Messages' of the Book of Revelation chapter 14, declaring a Judgment is come, that Babylon is fallen, with a warning, do not have anything to do with the Mark of the Beast, and to call for everyone to get ready for the Second Coming.
Again Satan became alarmed. Now he sees that he is fighting a remnant church which has the blessings of the Lord Jesus, and what does he do?
He enters the church and lulls its people to sleep, while at the same time he is feverishly preparing a world to fight the return of Jesus Christ. Even now he is marshaling the entire world into a new world order, in which, once again, the papacy with its deadly wound being healed, once more will control the entire world, making it possible for Satan to rule this world, and, still more, as an angel of light, he will deceive the world to think that he is the Christ who has returned. The inhabitants of the entire world will accept him and his rulership, except a faithful few called the remnant.
Satan will demand of all of his subjects to prepare for a fight to the finish - the Return of Jesus Christ. The Lord of Lords, and the King of Kings.
This brings us to the next phase, the decisive phase. This is,
6.The Great Battle of the Lord
... in the midst of which Christ is going to come to make war against Satan and his globally united religion which long has been foretold in the scriptures, and we read,
All these will be joined together against God.[570]
But God has His `army,' a remnant church which `keeps the Commandments of God and the Faith of Jesus.'
Two opposing sides.
And each side will have a distinctive uniform, just as soldiers, the revealing of the `Seal of God,' the Almighty God of the `Seventh-day Sabbath' will be the seal to be found on all of God's people. - The others, the Bible teachers, wear the `Mark of the Beast', first day Sunday keeping.
Each side will consider the other as treason to its government. In other words, if you obey God, the papacy will consider that as treason against its global world power. And if you obey the papacy, God will consider that as treason against Him.
Let us read this startling statement in Manuscript 1, p. 1890, where it says,
This means that in this last great battle, we are going to have to stand alone. While we have God on our side, we will be severely tested. [600]
These tests are not only over doctrines. They are about all the great points of Christian living which keeps His church pure. That means we must turn away from all wordliness.
That is why we read,
You and I are going to participate in this last war. We are going to have to fight - fight much against our own inclinations to sin.
How is that done successfully?
While I am not a total expert on this, I know, it is done first of all by reading God's letter to us (the Bible) every day and come before Him and pray. That opens up a channel of communication with God. It also helps to have quiet reign in our homes so as not to disrupt our spiritual connection with God who wants to impress us with heavenly thoughts - to sanctify you and me. When you drive in your car - shut the music off and contemplate godly things - who knows, God may want to impress you with something you need to do.
Therefore, always strife to leave the connection to God open - no matter where you are.
That is all part of the battle against the roaring lion, the devil, the war we are finding ourselves in.
That is also why we read, there will be martyrs,
Are we ready for this?
Today it is not a question of getting ready. We live at a time when we are to be ready. Then, when it comes, as war does - and no other generation knows more about the fear of the atomic bomb than we do - suddenly it will come, quickly God says the last great battle will take place.
And remember this. Look back at Jesus. He was rejected by his own church. He, who knew no sin was charged with treason by his church.
And then he was rejected by pagan Rome and crucified for treason.
Can you sense today the battle that we have to face alone as Christ stood alone at calvary?
That is when we need to remember His Words we have learned and which He will bring back in to memory - words of faith and trust and His love - even in the midst of severe tests and trials.
Charged with treason, not only by our church.
This is what God is trying to impress us with who have arrived at the end of the world. Get ready! Be ready!
If there is even one doubt in your mind about what God has revealed in His prophecies, as to what takes place in our life time, you must search and study these matters if you want to remain standing in this last great battle.
Yes!
We have no more time - young or old - to occupy us with frivolous things, with all the sports (except to stay healthy and minus competitive sports), with all the television and music, all those things which take our time away from thinking godly thoughts - all that must end if we are to be serious about our faith and wanting to be a part in God's kingdom.
So don't knock it,
It also means we stop yelling at others, are more and always courteous, step back instead of pushing on the gas, let the other person get ahead instead of trumping him, leave earlier so we don't have to rush - come on folks, let us change our life - whatever it takes.
Yes, we want to win souls. But we all must be so positive in our knowledge of God so we are not in doubt anymore. Doubters can hardly win in this battle. Doubters must work overtime to acquaint themselves with His Word - if they want to be positive in their faith.
Doubt is a great instrument of the devil to keep us unready. We must fight it with all we have.
"Well," you say, "that is easier said than done."
Right.
So, look at your budget, see if you can obtain some tools. Make sure you have a Bible or more. Have you ever heard of a Concordance? Check your local bookstore or if nothing else works, Amazon.com.
God has given His remnant church a heavenly messenger. Have you read her books? It really does help and we should.
We read,
Again, we ask, `Are you ready?'
We must correct perhaps a wrong impression, that, yes, God is love and Jesus loves us - but we shall also face a battle - we shall have to fight for our spiritual life to remain in tune with God. We are not sleeping on a bed of roses. We must bestir us and get ready for the fight of our goal to be with God.
That promise does not just fall into our lap without us lifting a finger.
Yes, there will be joy when we finally see our Lord in the clouds. But before that day our faith will be tested. Starting with those of responsible age in your house, church or neighborhood, to the oldest. All, no exception, will be tested. We must raise our children differently - like Jochebed raised Moses, like Hanna raised Samuel, like Mary raised Jesus. They raised their children with the Word of God - Oh, not just the children's stories, NO. The unchanged Word as it reads. All of the books in the Bible. Even the hard to understand passages so you learn to understand them.
Yes, we have no more time for funny stories and fiction - none at all.
Do you realize how terrible and demanding this last great battle will be?
Do you know how cleverly Satan can use the media, books, music, preaching, formerly thought of as innocent things of the world and turn them against our goal to remain committed to God?
Have you heard of Spiritualism?
Do you know what it is?
We need to be careful not to fall into its claws reaching out for us.
You see, the prophet John the Revelator was a witness of the terrible scenes which will take place before Christ's coming. John saw armies mustering for battle - well, do we see that today?
How about satanic armies?
Ah, now we must be more discerning.
Men's hearts, are they failing them for fear?
Oh, yes, just ask some of those who live in the midst of the trouble.
Even the earth itself is affected by the end time events.
John saw the vials of God's wrath opened.
Do you know what that means?
If not, study, study and study.
We must put on the armor of God - now.
That is why we read,
Why is it, that the religious harlot is coming down on us today?
Why is it, that the church today is not on spiritual fire?
Many are asleep. But they will be aroused, suddenly wake up, and then
"... the armies of the living God will take the field." We must learn to love the truth.
Go, study chapter 19 of Revelation. It says,
He tells us that his clothes are "... dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him ... " and he shall "... smite the nations ..." and we go on further down in this chapter and read, He comes as "... King of Kings, and Lord of Lords." ... and what will the armies of the world do? ... "And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army." ... Look at the final results. Suddenly, in the midst of this battle, the King and Lord - Jesus - Comes and "the dead in Christ shall rise ..."(1.Thess. 4:16) as numberless "as the stars of heaven ..." (Gen. 26:4) will be resurrected to see heaven's commander in the clouds of glory.
The living righteous, with the resurrected saints will be changed "in a moment" and given immortal life. ... together ..." we shall "... meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord."
But what about the hosts of Satan, who are then going to be totally defeated?
The living followers of Satan will be consumed by "... the brightness of his coming ..." (2.Thess. 2:8)
The wicked dead, of some 6000 years of human history will remain in Satan's "prison house." Only Satan and his angels will be chained to this old world, according to Revelation 20, for a thousand years,
7. The Battle of Armageddon, the final show down.
This battle will take place after the thousand years, the Millennium. During the 1000 years the wicked are to be judged for their punishment, Rev. 20:12.
Then, with the saints within the city - the New Jerusalem - with their risen commander, The King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords, the New Jerusalem will descend from heaven to this earth as John saw it,
And Christ will proceed. He will touch that very spot that he left some 2000 years ago, and then will take place the Second Resurrection of all of the wicked. Once again for the last time, the two opposing warring factions will stand face to face, with Christ, the commander of heaven, and Lucifer, the commander of all evil.
As Lucifer surrounds the city of God, as the saints are with Christ within the city, we read,
But what about Satan?
Thus the Great Battle of Armageddon will come to a final conclusion. God will recreate this earth, making it more beautiful than when it was created. The earth will be the center of the universe and the devil will be gone forever.
God has given us a picture.
What part will you and I have in it?
Will we be among those who will crown Him as Lord of Lords and King of Kings?
..............
"Crown Him with many crowns ......"

Notes & References [200] How is this changing of God's law demonstrated in the Bible? Since Satan works through human beings - he doesn't type laws himself or print them - Daniel 7:25 applies. When man chooses his own way and spurns God's way, this changing of laws can happen too.
[400] That God's people are being infiltrated by wicked powers is also spoken of by the prophets. We read, "Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.
Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for [I] will work a work in your days, [which] ye will not believe, though it be told [you]. For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, [that] bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwelling places [that are] not theirs." Hab. 1:4-6. First of all Habakkuk notes that the law is powerless, there is no justice. Then he writes of the Chaldeans. Who are they? The divine sentence was that Babylon is going to march through the land of God's people. Those Chaldean idol worshippers infiltrate the whole land with their falsities. This is especially a book which speaks to those living in the last days before Jesus comes. -- When Babylon marches through the land; they are not marching through the land as a parade. This is a battle, this is not a parade. Ellen White said that our world is not a parade ground, but a battlefield. -- In 1988, a pastor visiting in Australia was handed a note on his speaking tour. The message read something like this: "I am a member of the Society of Jesus. I am teaching in a
school for the Church of England. There is a church described in Revelation 12:17 and 19:10. We have thoroughly infiltrated that church. SJ" - We know, the SJ has thoroughly infiltrated this church. [500] How words can make a person into a pathological liar. "The words are an indication of what is in the heart. `Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.'(Matthew 12:34) But the words are more than an indication of character, they have power to react upon the character. Did you follow that? The words are more than an indication of character. Words tell what kind of person you are. But also, they react on the character. You can talk yourself into things. You can say things that are not true until you believe them. "Men are influenced by their own words. Often under a momentary impulse, prompted by Satan, they give utterance to jealousy or evil surmising, expressing that which they do not really believe; but the expression reacts upon the thoughts. They are deceived by their words, and come to believe that to be true which was spoken at Satan's instigation. Having once expressed an opinion or decision, they are often too proud to retract it and try to prove themselves in the right, until they come to believe that they are." [DA, 323.] This is how a person can become a pathological liar and become so self deceived that he loses contact with reality and believes his own imaginations to be true. [530] Simon Magus: Earlier in the life of the Apostle Peter, he had an encounter with Simon Magus, a Samaritan who was a priest of Babylonian persuasion. Simon Magus was a studied man and wanted to purchase the title of Apostle which he thought he deserved after having been baptized by a mission effort of Peter in Samaria. (Acts 8:9-25). This Simon was a crafty man who saw an advantage for his own causes when there was one, and knew how to take advantage so as to further his own goals. His main goal became more and more to be the founder of a worldwide, universal church. His `conversion' was not a genuine conversion. Having been rebuffed by Peter because of his `simony', trying to purchase a religious office (the word `simony' was coined after his name), he seemed to have entertained a defiant anger and used all his prowess and skill to achieve his goal to become the head of a universal church. For that purpose he removed at some point to Rome where he taught his mixture of Christianity and Babylonian mysticism, thereby revealing himself as the agency, the man of sin, by which the once true and pure Christian religion became adulterated in time to be a Romanized, Catholic, universal, false religion. While in Rome, Simon Magus also assumed the name Simon Peter, which led to much confusion and the idea that the Apostle Peter was the first Pope, when actually this pagan priest Simon Magus, alias Simon Peter, became the first Pope of his universal church. Thus his sect of paganized Christian services were adopted into the Catholic Church. [See also A. Harnack, A History of the Christian Church, N.Y. 1907-10; Vol. p..; J. Hasting, Dictionary of the Apostolic Church, 1915-18, Vol. I, II, various pages.; and his History of Dogma. If you can read German or would want to see just a few more Bible texts and explanations click here.] [550] Bible believing Christians serve a God of love. His trademark is that His followers are "to love one another", even as He loved us. When these many pagans converted to the Christian faith, many were not truly converted to Bible beliefs. When pagan Christians read about the love of God and fellow man, they kept reading the Greek word agape. Well, the pagan lifestyle believed in free love but they called that love by the Greek word eros. Eros love was the highest form of love in their thinking. So, the church leaders in the next few decades and centuries after John the Revelator had passed away, knew they had a problem on their hands. The orthodox Christians accepted only agape loving converts in their churches. The liberal Christians wanted to see only eros loving followers in their meetings. Augustine was then an up and coming thought leader through his writings. In order to solve the problem, he invented another concept of this agape love in contrast to the eros love and called it caritas, from which stems our word, "cherity." So, some Bibles use this word "cherity" in 1.Corinthians 13, instead of the word `love' in English Bibles. Ok, is there a problem. Yes, there is a conceptual problem, for you see God's agape love is unconditional, spontaneous, uncaused and independent of our goodness or worth, (Rom. 5:6-10). It is a changeless and everlasting love. It is self-emptying, i.e. it is selfless, and therefore will step down for the benefit of others (1.Cor, 13:5; 2.Cor. 8:9; Phil. 2:6-8). - - However, the eros type love is conditional. It depends on someone's beauty or goodness and therefore needs arousing. It is changeable, it fluctuates and is unreliable (consider the divorce rate in the US). Not only that, but it is also self-seeking, i.e. it is egocentric, and therefore always wants to climb socially, politically, academically, economically, and even religiously. - - The eros gospel believes in `Salvation by Works Alone.' In contrast, the agape gospel believes in `Salvation by Grace Alone.' - - So the system Augustine was instrumental in inventing said, caritas is a compromise solution, it teaches `Salvation by Faith + Works.' That makes his gospel a perverted, impure gospel. Millions of people in the world believe in this Caritas Gospel, to the expense of the `Salavation by Faith Alone Gospel' which Seventh-day Adventists teach. You see, the types of works which the eros followers believe in are those "works" which were not ordained by God. But the works we don't seek are dead works, Jesus says, "... He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my father." John 14:12. You see, when we do as Jesus did, our self efforts do not exist - Jesus does it all, Rom. 6:7-13; Lk 9:23; 1.Cor. 15:31. What are dead works of Hebre. 6:1? The forgiveness of sin is promised to him who repents and believes, but is it enough? But we are also looking for deliverance from sin without which our life is a vicious cycle of sinning, being forgiven and sinning again. But we realize that sinful acts may be forgiven and blotted out by the blood of Christ, however, our sinful nature is not affected by forgiveness, it must be ended or "crucified". Our sinful nature is beyond repair. It cannot be rebuild into something that is acceptable to God. - - So then what? and thus for the crown of life that will be the reward of him who is faithful to the end. We may grow in grace by improving through the grace we already have. We are to keep ourselves unspotted from the world if we would be found blameless in the day of God. Faith and works go hand in hand; they act harmoniously in the work of overcoming. Works without faith are dead, and faith without works is dead. Works will never save us; it is the merit of Christ that will avail in our behalf. Through faith in Him, Christ will make all our imperfect efforts acceptable to God. The faith we are required to have is not a do-nothing faith; saving faith is that which works by love and purifies the soul. He who will lift up holy hands to God without wrath and doubting will walk intelligently in the way of God's commandments. [570] Some may say, Well, its not fair to call these religions this way. Where does that come from. The reply would be, The Bible and history identifies these religions as such. We just as soon had it nice and smooth, but that is not the world we live in.

Jesus prophesied that before God will bring this wicked world to an end,
"this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness" (Matthew 24:14). When this prophecy is fulfilled, every person on this earth who has reached the age of accountability will have made his or her ultimate choice, either for or against Christ.
At the time, the whole human race will be polarized into only two distinct camps. The Bible describes these two groups in many different ways:
In other words, the two groups will be (1) those who belong to God and (2) those who are still ruled by Satan (see 1.John 5:19). Because of this polarization, the closing events of this world's history will culminate with the final showdown between Christ and Satan. As pointed out in our study on the atonement, this controversy began in heaven when Lucifer, the highest angelic being, rebelled against Christ, the second Person of the Godhead (see Revelation 12:7-9). In this final showdown, which the book of Revelation describes as the `war of Armageddon' or "the battle of the great day of God Almighty" (Rev. 16:12-16), the conflict will actually be between God's people - the last generation of Christians, and Satan's people - those who have deliberately and ultimately rejected Christ and have chosen to be under the leadership of Satan. At that time, the faith of this final generation of Christians will be tried and tested to the utmost in a way that no other generation of believers has ever been tested. This final test is described in the Bible as the great tribulation or the time of trouble. It will take place just before the Second Coming of Christ and the end of the world. Those believers who will endure this great time of trouble and will triumph over the full force of Satan's attacks are described in the Bible as the Remnant. They are the ones who "overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death", Rev. 12:11).
According to Bible prophecy, we are presently living in the antitypical Day of Atonement, the closing events of this earth's history. This was the subject of our last study. Therefore, it is God's purpose that every believer living in these last days be part of that last generation of Christians who will vindicate Him in this final showdown between Christ and Satan. In this study we will examine what the Bible has to say about the Remnant, whom we will discover are "the 144,000," the ones who will vindicate the full power of the gospel by their unshakable faith.

22 |
| 1. | What did Jesus say will take place before the end of the world? Matthew 24:14 | Answer: "And this gospel of the kingdom shall be _____________ ___ ______ ____ ________ for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come." |
| Note: According to Scripture, God does not want anyone to be lost (see 2.Peter 3:9). That is why He will not bring this sin-cursed world to an end until He gives everyone the opportunity to accept His gift of salvation in Christ. |
| 2. | How is this gospel of the kingdom described in the book of Revelation? Revelation 14:6 | Answer: "And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the ______________ ___________ to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people." |
| Note: The reason why this final message to the world is called "the everlasting gospel" is because it was planned from eternity (see Ephesians 1:4; 2. Timothy 1:9 and Rev. 13:8) and is the only message that offers everlasting hope to mankind. This is the message that will carry the last generation of Christians through the great time of trouble! |
| 3. | Who gets angry when the everlasting gospel is proclaimed and why? Rev. 12:12 | Answer: "Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the ________ is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time." |
| Note: The devil hates the everlasting gospel because it is the only power that he cannot defeat. He will therefore do his utmost to destroy anyone who proclaims this message as well as anyone who receives it. |
| 2. | How does the Bible describe the last generation of Christians? Rev. 12:17b | Answer: "And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with ____ _____________ of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ." |
| Note: The last generation of Christians are described as "the remnant of her seed" (KJV). The word "remnant" in the Bible refers to God's people who remain faithful to Him no matter what happens; those whose faith endures to the end in spite of apostasy or persecution (see Romans 11:2-5). |
| 5. | According to the prophet Isaiah, who only will be saved? Romans 9:27 | Answer: "Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, ____ _____________ shall be saved." |
| Note: To experience ultimate salvation, it is not enough to believe in Christ; faith must endure unto the end (see Matthew 10:22). In the last days, the Christians who endure the time of trouble and remain faithful to Christ unto the end are called the Remnant. |
| 6. | What question does Jesus raise regarding His Second Coming? Luke 18:8 | Answer: "I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find __________ on the earth?" |
| Note: ______________ |
| 7. | What similar question does John the author of the Book of Revelation ask? Rev. 6:15-17 |
Answer: "And the _________ of the earth, and the _______ men, and the _______ men, and the _________ captains, and the _________ men, and every _____________, and every ______ man, _____ themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And ________ to the mountains and rocks, ________ ____ ____, and ________ ____ from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of is wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?" |
| Note: Judging from the description given in Revelation 6:15,16, it seems no one will be able to withstand the Second Coming of Christ. But in Revelation 7, John answers the question by describing the Remnant who will be able to stand. The word "Remnant" means the faithful ones. |
| 8. | What must happen before the great tribulation takes place? Rev. 7:2-3 |
Answer: "And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, ______ ____ _______ ____________ the servants of our God in their foreheads." |
| Note: Before God allows Satan to test the Remnant, their faith has to be sealed. This seal in their foreheads means that their minds are fully settled into the truth of the gospel. Their faith in God's love, and the truth as it is in Christ, has become unshakable, no matter what Satan and the wicked do to them. |
| 9. | How many of the last generation of believers will be sealed? Rev. 7:4 | Answer: "And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed ___ ________ ______ ______ ____ _______ ___________ of all the tribes of the children of Israel." |
| Note: The 144,000 who are sealed is not a literal number [10] but a special, victorious group. In Revelation 7:4 John does not see them but only hears their number. The reason for this is because they are scattered throughout the whole world. However, in Revelation 7:9, he sees them and they are "a great multitude, which no one could number." We know this vast multitude is referring to the 144,000 because in Revelation 7:13,14 they are described as being victorious in the great tribulation. |
| 10. | What will the 144,000 sing in heaven, which no other saint can sing? Rev. 14:3 | Answer: "And they sung as it were a _______ _________ before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth." |
| Note: _______________ |
| 11. | What makes these 144,000 so special in God's eyes? Rev. 14:4 | Answer: "These are they which were _____ __________ with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb." |
| Note: The reason that the 144,000 will sing a new song is because it is the song of total victory over Satan. That is why they will be given special privileges in heaven. Their faith will have endured the great tribulation and in doing so, they will have vindicated God in the final showdown between Christ and Satan. |
| 12. | How does the prophet Daniel describe the great tribulation? Daniel 12:1 | Answer: "And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, _______ ____ ________ _______ since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book." |
| Note: The great tribulation will be a time of trouble such as has not been experienced by any previous generation. The prophet Jeremiah gives a similar description (see Jeremiah 30:7). But both prophets indicate that God's sealed people, the Remnant, will be victorious and ultimately will be delivered. |
| 13. | What will make the time of trouble so terrible for the Remnant? Isaiah 54:7a | Answer: "For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee." |
| Note: The issue in the great tribulation will be much more than physical torture. [See also here] Rather, it will be similar to what Christ faced on the cross when He felt forsaken of God (see Matthew 27:46). In this great tribulation, God will produce a people who will manifest the faith of Jesus even though they feel God has abandoned them (see Rev. 14:12). This is the faith Christ manifested on the cross and which will be reproduced in the Remnant. |
| 14. | In order for our faith to be unshakable, in what must it be grounded? Ephesians 3:17 | Answer: "That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in ___________." |
| Note: The word "dwell" in the original actually means "to permanently dwell." This is possible only when our faith in Christ is rooted and grounded in God's `agape' love, which we studied already about [See here]. It is faith in this unconditional love that is able to keep us from falling in the great tribulation (read 1. John 4:16-19). |
| 15. | What should all Christians be convinced of regarding God's love? Romans 8:38-39 |
Answer: "For I am persuaded, that neither ________, nor _______, nor _________, nor __________________, nor ___________, nor things __________, nor things to ________, Nor _________, nor __________, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." |
| Note: When we are rooted and grounded in God's agape love, we will know that nothing on earth or in heaven can ever separate us from God's love, which was manifested to mankind in Christ (see Romans 5:5-10). |
| 16. | How does the prophet Jeremiah describe God's love? Jeremiah 31:3 | Answer: "The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an _______________ love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee." |
| Note: There will never come a time when God will stop loving us. We may fail Him but He will never fail or forsake us. Although we will feel forsaken of God in the time of trouble, our faith in His love will be unshakable. |
| 17. | According to Paul, who is the source of our power in Christian living? 2.Corinthians 4:7 | Answer: "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of ______, and not of us." |
| Note: ____________ |
| 18. | How does Paul describe the Christian battle between faith and feeling? 2.Corinthians 4:8-9 |
Answer: "We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed." |
|
Note: We must never confuse faith with feelings. Under distress or persecution, the two will part company so that our feelings will contradict our faith. But we must not allow our negative feelings to get the better of us. Instead, our faith in God's love must be what directs our actions. May this be your experience.
Be prepared! During the Great Tribulation, our faith and feelings will part company. But never, ever give up your faith. You may feel that you have let God down. Do not be dismayed, for all fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Do not ever forget that it is only because of Jesus' righteousness - 2000 years ago - that believers stand completely righteous in Him today (see Colossians 2:10). It is only as we are united to Christ by faith, that He may present us "holy, and blameless, and irreproachable in His sight" (Col. 1:22). What is the condition? "If indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard ...." (Col. 1:23).[100]
The word "remnant" means "faithful ones." In Revelation they are represented as the 144,000 who will vindicate Christ and the power of the gospel during great tribulation. Do you want to be one of them? Response: ________________________________________________ |

Notes & References for the Bible Study
[10] The symbolic nature of the 144,000 is conveyed in the rendering of the tribes of Revelation 7:4-8. Not all the tribes are listed (there is replacement with near kin), and their order is different than in the Old Testament. A secondary reason for ordering the tribes, as such, was to convey a special message, using the literal meaning of the Hebrew names. Explanation: Read the dark and light blue portions in each section separately as one sentence or thought. A) In Revelation 7:9,10 John sees the great multitude praising (Judah - "And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing." Genesis 29:35) God (the Father) and the Lamb(Rev. 4:2;7:9) (the Son: Reuben - "And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the Lord hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me."Gen. 29:32). B) This troop (Gad - "And Leah said, A troop cometh: and she called his name Gad." Gen. 30:11) is immensely happy (Asher - "And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher." Gen. 30:13) because they wrestled (Naphthali - "And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naphtali." Gen. 30:8) with Satan, overcoming him by the blood of the Lamb (Rev. 12:11). C) They forgot (Manasseh - "And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house." Gen. 41:51) the trials of the great tribulation as they heard (Dt. 4:30; Rev. 7:14) (Simeon - "And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the Lord hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon." Gen. 29:33) their reward: Forever, they will be "attached" (Levi - "And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi." Gen. 29:34) to the Lamb, following Him wherever He goes (Rev. 14:1-4). D) There is hire (Isaachar - "And Leah said, God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my husband: and she called his name Issachar." Gen. 30:18) for them, serving God day and night in His temple (Rev. 7:15). E) He who sits on the throne will dwell (Zebulun - "Now will my husband dwell with me." (Gen. 30:20). F) "And she called his name Joseph; and said, The Lord shall add to me another son." Gen. 30:24) among them to be sons of the right hand (Benjamin - "And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin." Gen. 35:18) with the Lamb.
[100] Christ the World's Only Hope: `Faultfinding', `the love of the world', `lack of consecration', and `the love of earthly treasures and possessions' were always to a large degree responsible for the condition of the church. To get out of our deplorable, lukewarm condition we must `be zealous and repent.' We must be concerned with our own condition, not first with that of the one next to us. We must consider the wrongs of our life, the failing examples we set, being destitute of the gold we ought to represent. `I am then ashamed of my past mismovements, and feel to heartily repent before God. I ask the forgiveness and prayers of all I have in any way grieved. I mean to make clean work, and arise with the remnant. {Frederick Wheeler, `Ye are the Light of the World,' Dec. 18, 1856, p. 54; A.S. Hutchins, R&H, Feb. 5, 1857, p. 109.; M.E. Cornell, R&H, Feb. 5, 1857, p. 109} `Law, I see I am a sinner. Please help me!' |
